NuTech Solutions was founded by Dan Cullen, Matthew Michalewicz and Dr. Zbigniew Michalewicz. The company’s initial vision was to take the scientific breakthroughs developed by Dr. Michalewicz and apply the resulting technologies to challenging business problems. NuTech found early success attracting a number of Fortune 100 clients like GM and Ford.


Seeking a global presence and expanded scientific expertise, NuTech Solutions acquired Divis Digital Solutions, GmBH based in Dortmund, Germany. Its founder, Dr. Thomas Baeck, authored Evolutionary Algorithms: Theory and Practice, invested more than 10 years developing the field of Evolution Strategies, and applied his technologies to solving industrial business problems for a number of prominent clients in Europe including BMW, Phillips, and Siemens. The acquisition incorporated the talents of Dr. Baeck’s team, including a number of complementary technologies.


A second expansion in early 2000 brought Dave Davis of Tica Technologies, Inc. of Boston, MA into the fold. Tica Technologies was one of the first companies specializing in genetic algorithm consulting. Dr. Lawrence "David" Davis, author of Genetic Algorithms and Simulated Annealing, founded Tica in 1990, and in the next ten years the Tica team implemented a variety of business applications for numerous major clients including US West. Dr. Davis has spent 24 years advancing the state of the art in the application of evolutionary algorithms to real-world problems. His skills, and those of the Tica team, further expanded NuTech’s knowledge base.


NuTech Solutions added to its team of world-renowned scientists by opening an office in Warsaw, Poland. Dr. Maciej Michalewicz’s data mining specialists established a deep pool of talent to complement NuTech’s existing technologies. The office’s initial focus on advanced text mining technologies and predictive marketing applications has led to a steady stream of clients including PKN Orlen and the Polish Air Force Academy.


NuTech Solutions and BiosGroup, Inc. (with offices in Santa Fe, NM and Washington D.C.) joined continuing operations, and Matthew and Zbigniew Michalewicz separated from the company later in the year. BiosGroup was founded by Dr. Stuart Kauffman with a mission to tackle industry’s toughest problems through the application of an emerging technology, Complexity Science. Dr. Kauffman is a MacArthur Fellow and one of the founding scientists of the Santa Fe Institute where Complexity Science was pioneered. The addition of complexity-based technologies to NuTech’s optimization, prediction and forecasting technologies positioned an unmatched capability to tackle previously unsolvable business challenges.
